Raw Oreos Recipe (Vegan & Gluten-free)

This recipe isone of my favourite cookie recipes, along with my date cookies and chocolate tahini cookies. The difference with these is that they’re raw/no-bake and are best eaten chilled straight out of the fridge, so they’re a really nice cool treat during summer, but are still rich and indulgent.

This recipe makes about 15 raw “oreos”. Usually when I eat cookies, I simply can’t stop eating them. I keep saying to myself ‘OK, just one more and then that’s it!’ but end up reaching out formoreanyway, which is a problem 😛 But because these raw oreosarequite rich,I feel satisfied after just eating one (sometimes two!) but no more than that. So theyshould last you a good few days.

I’m calling these cookies Oreos, even though both thehubby and my mum keep telling me it’s a bad idea as it setspeople’s expectations. Even though these cookies are super delicious and indulgent, they definitely don’t taste like ‘real’ Oreos and by calling them Oreos people will expect to taste Oreos when they bite into them. They might not taste like Oreos, but they’re definitely yummy, so I think I can get away with it 😛

Something that many of you don’tknow about me is that I’m soclumsy! I’m dropping things all the time, it’s not even funny. I don’t know how it happens. One minute I’m holding something in my hand, the next minute it’s on the floor! And being thefoodie I am,most of the time it’s food!

We’ve all been in that situation where we drop food onthe floor and we’re faced with the dilemma of ‘should I still eat it or not?’ I know I’ve been there more times than I would like to admit haha! I’m sure you’ve all heard of the 5second (sometimes 3second) rule. In that if you pick up the piece of food within 3 seconds it should be ok to eat. As far as I’m concerned, once it touches the floor it touches the floor. If bacteria are going to get on it they will the second it touches the floor. But if the floor is clean,is it still a no no to eat it anyway?

Here’s a fun infographic that will help you make thatdecision.

Chocolate Cookie

  1. 1 cup (115g) oat flour (plain rolled oats blended into a flour in the food processor)
  2. 1/2 cup (58g) cocoa/cacao powder
  3. 1/4 (4 tbsp) cup maple syrup (or any other liquid sweetener)
  4. 2.5 tbsp melted coconut oil
  5. 1/4 tsp salt

Cashew Cream

  1. 3/4 cup (90g) cashews - soaked in water for at 8 hours or overnight
  2. 1.5 tbsp maple syrup (or any other liquid sweetener)
  3. 1 tbsp coconut oil
  4. 1 tbsp milk of choice
  5. 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  6. Pinch salt

Instructions

  1. To make the cookies - In a large bowl, mix together the oat flour, cocoa and salt, then mix in the maple syrup, vanilla and melted coconut oil. You should end up with a dough consistency.
  2. Roll out between 2 pieces of parchment paper to your desired thickness. Cut into circles (or stars, hearts...etc) using a cookie cutter.
  3. Use one of the sheets of parchment paper to cover a large plate or chopping board and arrange the cookies on top. Place in the fridge and leave for 30 minutes to set.
  4. To make the cream - drain and rinse the cashews and place them in a high powered blender/food processor along with the rest of the ingredients. Blend until smooth.
  5. Take the cookies out and sandwich with the cashew cream.
  6. Store them in the fridge, they taste so much better when chilled.
  7. Enjoy!

So shocked and relieved that dates arent in the ingredients! As much as i love them, they are way too high in sugar for me right now, and most raw treats call for like 25 dates, its ridiculous. Thank you for sharing 🙂

FAQs

Are Oreos vegan and gluten-free? ›

We can definitely say that as of 1998, the classic Oreo is vegan. So are the Double-Stuf (which are actually only 1.8 times more stuffed, but who's counting?), Mega Stuff, Gluten-Free and Gluten-Free Double Stuf, Golden and Golden Double Stuf, and The Most Oreo Oreo.

Why is Oreo not vegan? ›

The longer answer. As the Oreo FAQ page states, while Oreos are indeed veggie-friendly, they are not strictly vegan as 'Oreo have milk as cross-contact and therefore they are not suitable for vegans'.

How do they make Oreos vegan? ›

While Oreos have always been dairy-free, they were not suitable for vegans until 1997, when lard was removed from the formulation. These days, plant-based oils take the place of animal fat. That said, Oreos still include ingredients that are not clearly labeled as vegan.

What are the ingredients in gluten free Oreos? ›

Ingredients : SUGAR, PALM OIL, WHITE RICE FLOUR, TAPIOCA STARCH, CANOLA OIL, WHOLE OAT FLOUR, CORNSTARCH, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), INVERT SUGAR, SOY LECITHIN, BAKING SODA, SALT, XANTHAN GUM, CHOCOLATE, ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR.

Are Oreos actually vegan? ›

Many vegans refer to Oreos as “accidentally vegan,” meaning they don't contain animal products — but they weren't created to be a specifically vegan treat. Oreos do not contain milk, eggs, or any other animal-derived products, so they are technically vegan in that sense.

Which Oreo flavors are vegan? ›

In short, the vast majority of Oreos are vegan and do not contain any animal ingredients (not even milk!). These include: Classic Oreos, Golden Oreos, Double Stuff, and Chocolate Cream Oreos. The only Oreos which are not suitable for vegans are the Peanut Butter flavoured biscuits which contain milk.

When did Oreos stop being vegan? ›

In 2006, the partially hydrogenated vegetable oil was then replaced with non-hydrogenated vegetable oil. In 2013 the whey powder was removed, and finally, in 2014, Oreos were vegan in the US. So, it looks like Nabisco has been making an effort to veganize (that's a word, right?)

Is Peanut Butter vegan? ›

The bottom line. Most types of peanut butter are free of animal products and can be enjoyed as part of a vegan diet. However, some varieties are made in facilities that also process animal products or contain refined sugar that was produced using bone char or non-vegan ingredients like honey or fish oil.

Are Skittles vegan? ›

With that in mind, the simple answer is: yes. Skittles Classic Fruits are suitable for vegans. Though the bag only brands them as 'Suitable For Vegetarians', classic Skittles do have a vegan friendly status as they contain no animal products.

Is Jello vegan? ›

Why are Starbursts, marshmallows, and Jell-O not vegan? These seemingly innocent products contain gelatin. The use of this ingredient means these foods and others are not only unsuitable for vegans, but prohibited for vegetarians as well.

Is honey vegan? ›

In the strictest definition of the word, honey is not vegan. As the product of a living being –honeybees, though there are other some 20,000 bee species to be found around the world – honey falls into the same category of non-vegan food products as milk and eggs.

Are M&M's gluten-free? ›

The following Mars candies have no gluten-containg ingredients: M&Ms (except pretzel, crispy, and potentially seasonal items) Milky Way Caramel Bars (not the original Milky Way Bar) Snickers Bars.

Why is double Stuf spelled with one F? ›

You can't spell it “Stuff”, that's just two-f'ing many. ;) (Also, OREO should always be in all uppercase.) The spelling of "Double Stuf Oreos" with only one "f" in "Stuf" is a deliberate branding choice made by the Oreo company, Nabisco.

Are gluten free Oreos being discontinued? ›

According to Oreo, gluten-free Golden Oreos have been the most requested Gluten Free flavor, so the company decided to work its magic and bring them to life. But unlike the Oreo Black & White cookies, these new gluten-free Oreos will be “a permanent fixture” in its lineup.

Are Oreos really gluten free? ›

Allergens: Wheat

All of the above Oreo cookie flavors and colors are made with wheat flour. That mean none of the Oreo cookie flavors are gluten-free, so they are not safe for people with celiac disease.

What common candy is vegan? ›

Fortunately, loads of candies are vegan, so we can indulge our cravings (mostly) guilt-free. Most dark chocolate is vegan, as are popular sweet treats such as Smarties (known as Rockets in Canada), Oreos, Airheads, Jujubes, and Swedish Fish (some Swedish Fish contain beeswax, so be sure to check the label).

Are Sour Patch Kids vegan? ›

By standard definitions, regular Sour Patch Kids candies are vegan because they don't contain animal products. However, the sugar in all of the Sour Patch Kids candies was likely, at least in part, processed with animal bone char. That may be reason enough for some vigilant vegans to abstain.
