How to Make the Best Charcuterie Board

Making one of these cheese and meat boards at home is super easy, especially when you know what to add and how to add it! For me, it’s all about variety! I love to have a little bit of everything, with hummus in the center – meats, cheeses, pickles, olives, fruits and vegetables. Here are some tips for success:

  • Think about how opposites attract and place different items and different colors next to each. Try to place similar items, such as crackers and breads, across from each on the board.
  • Color is key! Incorporate the rainbow into your charcuterie board! Go with colorful veggies, fruits and spreads. And, try adding fresh herbs as garnish!
  • Items that are sliced can be fanned and spread for maximum appeal. For cured meats, try rolling or folding them to create more dimension.
  • Slice hard cheeses before adding them to the board to make enjoying them easier for your guests!
  • Feel free to move around any of the items as you are arranging the board – nothing has to be permanent!
  • There are hundreds of different appetizers you can put together with this board! Mix and match to try something new!

Hummus is The Hero!

Sabra’s hummus is the best dip and spread you can have at the center of your charcuterie spread! You can keep the hummus in its container, or you can transfer it into a separate bowl. Don’t use a knife with the hummus! Always use a spoon to swoosh, not smoosh, the hummus! I like to garnish the hummus with toppings such as pomegranate seeds, pumpkin seeds, fresh chopped herbs or even crumbled cheese!

Crackers & Breads

Every charcuterie board needs a variety of crackers, breads, or pretzels. I like to have at least 3 or 4 different types of ‘bases’ including toasted and thinly sliced baguette, sea salt crisps, pretzel twists and salted breadsticks. Start by placing these around the hummus, evenly spacing them around the board.

Cheeses & Meats

Once you have the crackers and breads arranged on the board, it’s time to add the meats and cheeses. I recommend adding a variety of cured meats and a few different types of cheeses. For my charcuterie board, I used prosciutto, dry coppa and two types of salami – a thinly sliced variety and a chunkier cut log of salami. For cured meats, try rolling or folding them to create more dimension.

For my cheeses, I went with a soft, semi-soft and hard cheese: triple crème, smoked gouda and white cheddar. Feel free to add your favorite cheeses to the board! I also love blue cheese, goat cheese and aged cheddar. Don’t forget to slice the hard cheeses before adding them to the board to make enjoying them easier for your guests!

Pickles & Olives

For my Italian-inspired charcuterie board, I added a variety of pickled veggies and olives! My choices were pickled baby bell peppers, spicy pepperoncini, caperberries and baby pickles. Feel free to add your favorite pickled veggies to the mix! I also added green and kalamata olives. Before adding the pickled veggies to the board, place them onto a paper towel to get rid of any excess pickling liquids. Place the olives into a small, decorative bowl to keep them all in one place!

Fruits & Veggies

And no charcuterie board would be complete without some fruit and vegetables! I love to add simple vegetables like cucumbers, carrots, cauliflower, radishes, baby bell peppers and tomatoes. They’re a great way to cleanse the palate in between bites of rich cheeses and meats! I also love to dip them into the hummus! Slice larger vegetables into smaller pieces and try to use baby vegetables when possible.

Try adding a few handfuls of blueberries, raspberries, strawberries or even blackberries to the board, too! My all-time favorite fruits for charcuterie boards are figs! They have a very short season though, so the next best thing is fig jam. I also enjoy dried fruits such as apricots, dates or prunes. You can garnish the board with pomegranate, too!

Extras!

Here are a few more delicious items you can add your next meat and cheese board to make it even more special!

  • Honeycomb: this one is my husband’s favorite! A little bit of honeycomb not only looks pretty but also tastes amazing!
  • Mixed Nuts or Almonds: salted or roasted nuts are a tasty and crunchy addition!
  • Jams/Jellies: I love using fig jam when figs aren’t in season. Sweet pepper jelly is also a great idea!
  • Chopped Sun-Dried Tomatoes: this is such a great addition! Just chop the tomatoes and place them into a small ramekin, then enjoy with the hummus!

  • 10 to 15 thin breadsticks

  • 1 cup twisted pretzels

  • 15 to 20 seed crisps or crackers

  • 1 small log of salami, sliced

  • 10 to 15 thinly-sliced salami

  • 15 to 20 slices dry coppa

  • 10 slices prosciutto

  • 1 small wedge triple crème cheese

  • 1 small wheel smoked gouda, sliced

  • 1 small square white cheddar, sliced

  • 1 cup olive mix – green, kalamata and/or black

  • ½ cup pepperoncini

  • ½ cup pickled baby bell peppers

  • ¼ cup caperberries

  • 10 to 15 baby pickles

  • 10 to 15 baby carrots

  • Small bunch red radish

  • 1 watermelon radish, sliced

  • ½ English cucumber, sliced

  • 10 to 15 cherry tomatoes

  • 10 to 15 baby bell peppers

  • 1 cup blueberries

  • 1 cup raspberries

  • ½ cup kumquats, halved

  • ¼ cup pomegranate seeds

  • 10 to 15 dried dates

  • ½ cup almonds

  • ¼ cup fig jam or pepper jelly

  • Small honeycomb

  • ¼ cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes

  • Small bunch fresh rosemary

Instructions

  • Start by placing the hummus into the center of a large board or lazy Susan turntable. Use a spoon to mix and swoosh the hummus; don’t use knives with hummus.

  • Begin with the dry crackers and breads, placing them evenly onto the board around the hummus. Fan the sliced bread for best visual effects. Feel free to move around any of the items as you are arranging the board – nothing has to be permanent!

  • Next, add the cured meats and cheeses. Roll or fold the salami, prosciutto and dry coppa for the best presentation and add onto various parts of the board. Slice the hard cheeses and arrange nicely onto the board. Watch my video recipe to see how I do it!

  • Place the olives into a small ramekin before adding to the board. For the pickled vegetables, place them into small groups onto the board next to the meats and cheeses. Before adding the pickled vegetables, place them onto a paper towel to get rid of pickling liquids.

  • Add the fresh vegetables next. Fan the sliced cucumber and arrange the radishes and tomatoes into neat piles. Layer the watermelon radish on its own to show the beautiful colors!

  • Drop handfuls of blueberries and raspberries onto the board. Add the sliced kumquats all over the board for extra color and garnish.

  • Add the dried dates and a handful or two of almonds/mixed nuts. If desired, add a small ramekin of fig jam and chopped sun-dried tomatoes. If you have the space, add a small square of honeycomb; this can also be held separately on the side.

  • Sprinkle the pomegranate seeds over hummus and over the board. Garnish the board with sprigs of fresh rosemary wherever color is needed.

  • Include spreads, slicers and small plates on the side when serving. Make sure to include spoons for the hummus!

Hi, again. I tried to do this as a reply to your reply on YouTube, but it didn’t work. The stuff I’m talking about is the little toasty things you add starting about 1:55 to 1:57. They remind me of something, almost like dark, bread slice-shaped biscotti/melba toasts. /;))) They just look like they’d be such a nice contrast to the hummus and cheeses.

Hi! Those are called RainCoast Crisps; I used the fig and olive variety. I buy these at Whole Foods but Amazon also has them. Enjoy!
